How often do Russians have to work while on vacation?

Working on vacation is becoming an increasingly common practice in Russia. Over the past three years, every second employee had to work during a long rest. These are the results of a survey of the Avito Work service. 25% of respondents reported returning to their duties on leave once or twice since 2021, and 10% more than four times. At the same time, more than half of Russians are ready to participate in work processes remotely: if necessary, they take calls and respond to messages from colleagues. However, younger employees do this much less often.

Kommersant FM contacted top managers of companies and found out how often their employees work during vacation.

HR Director of the IT company Arenadata Yulia Levchenkova: “I think this is definitely not the norm. Our company has a basic thesis: we advocate a balance between the employee’s work life and free time. In our opinion, these two areas should complement each other. If an employee rests well, devotes enough time to himself and his family, then this will have a positive impact on his efficiency and the effectiveness of the business as well. Often workers can actually neglect this balance, which is why it is important to teach them how to manage their time wisely. This year we are even planning to launch a special project in which we will train employees how to organize this balance.”

Managing partner of the consulting company RosExpert Oksana Morsina: “Of course, there should be a full vacation. But if we talk about top managers, CEOs or business owners, then usually this is not the question. There is no vacation here when you can completely switch off, because things cannot be delayed, and some force majeure happens at the most inopportune moment. We have a consulting business, and therefore sometimes we also have to step in when the client needs you. Here, too, vacation is not a hindrance. But in general, we are for people to have the opportunity to fully recover. We usually find an opportunity for consultants to replace each other during this time.”

Head of the corporate department of the jewelry company “Russian Gems” Alexander Yakovlev: “For us, vacation is sacred. Jewelers have their own peculiarity precisely from the point of view of production: we rest once a year. If we are not talking about commercial or financial blocks, but specifically about production itself, then such employees go on vacation for a month once a year in the summer, in July, so as not to disrupt the technological cycle. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were some changes, but in general this is not the practice here. There is the involvement, for example, of some employee on the side if someone, for example, is sick, but this is not about working during vacation, but rather, outsourcing is taking place.”

Almost 70% of participants in the Avito Rabota survey admit that they themselves bother colleagues who are on vacation. A similar problem exists in many Russian companies, the reason is an insufficiently developed corporate culture, says Tatyana Dolyakova, general director of the ProPersonnel recruitment agency: “Our employer would always like employees to be included, involved in the process, and even on vacation to respond to letters or even though would check the mail. And in fact, our employees are, indeed, very responsible and involved.

That is, we, for example, came across employees from India, and they, in principle, do not check email after seven o’clock in the evening or on weekends. If we talk about generation Z, then its representatives are not ready to spend so much time on work. Young people definitely work less, want higher salaries and not only work, but also spend their time differently.

At the same time, I would say that it’s still not worth working from vacation, and this is actually burnout; employees don’t rest and can’t switch gears. In addition, it has a bad effect on family relationships, which is important.

Another thing is that especially in the high season, as now, it is recommended to at least check your email and make sure that there are no super-urgent, important matters, the rest can be delegated. Probably, the problem of Russian specialists is that as a system there is no experience in delegating their tasks and even transferring cases when people go on vacation.”

The employer, according to the Labor Code, does not have the right to interrupt an employee’s vacation. The manager can do this only after receiving written consent from the subordinate.
