The Moscow hockey club Spartak introduced 40-year-old forward Ilya Kovalchuk as a team player. This happened during a pause in the red-white game against the capital’s Dynamo at the Megasport arena.
The scoreboard showed a video of Kovalchuk shaking hands with Spartak head coach Alexei Zhamnov. The video is accompanied by the caption “Welcome home, Ilya.”
It is assumed that Kovalchuk will sign a contract with Spartak for the period until the end of this season, and will take to the ice for the first time on December 24 against the Beijing Kunlun Red Star.
Kovalchuk began his adult career with Spartak and then went to the NHL. He played for the Russian national team and is the 2018 Olympic champion and two-time world champion. The hockey player also played for Ak Bars, Khimik, SKA, and his last Russian club was Avangard Omsk, which he left in 2021.
