Hockey player Gurkov renounced Russian citizenship in order to participate in the world championship for Kazakhstan
Forward of the KHL club “Barys” Dmitry Gurkov renounced the citizenship of the Russian Federation in favor of Kazakhstan.
Gurkov has been playing for Barys since 2016. He played for the Kazakhstan national team at the 2018, 2021 and 2022 World Championships.
The Shayba.kz portal reports that at the initiative of the fans, a check was carried out, during which four hockey players of the national team, as it turned out, have dual citizenship. Anton Sagadeev, Yegor Petukhov, and Alexei Maklyukov decided to give up the passport of Kazakhstan in favor of the Russian one. Gurkov did the opposite.
The 2023 Ice Hockey World Championship will be held in Riga (Latvia) and Tampere (Finland) in May. The Russian national team, by decision of the IIHF, will not perform at this tournament.
