The Moscow hockey club CSKA reported that the management decided not to renew the contract with head coach Sergei Fedorov. The contract with the specialist expires on April 30. 49-year-old Ilya Vorobyov was appointed as the new head coach.

Let us recall that 54-year-old Sergei Fedorov was previously a Soviet and Russian hockey player, a center forward. He played for CSKA, and in 1990 he went to the NHL, where he played for the Detroit Red Wings and won three Stanley Cups with the club. He also played for other American clubs.

As for Vorobyov, he began his coaching career in 2011. At the club level, the specialist coached Metallurg Magnitogorsk and SKA St. Petersburg. With the Ural club, the specialist won the Gagarin Cup twice – in 2014 as an assistant head coach, and in 2016 as the team’s head coach. He also worked on the Russian national team, winning the Olympic Games in 2018 as a member of the coaching staff.

Vorobyov is well acquainted with the army team. He played twice in the final series of the Gagarin Cup against CSKA, winning one of the confrontations and winning the trophy.

The Rosneft company has owned the CSKA hockey club for 12 years.
