The Nizhny Novgorod hockey club Torpedo has signed a three-year contract with head coach Igor Larionov. He led the team before the start of last season. Under the leadership of Mr. Larionov, Torpedo achieved the best result in the history of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Torpedo general director Alexander Kharlamov said that extending the contract has become one of the club’s priorities. “The development vector that we chose definitely appealed to the fans. And the attention to the club, combined with sporting results, as well as the discovery and development of new players, speaks for itself,” says his statement.

Igor Larionov is 63 years old, two-time Olympic champion, four-time world champion as a member of the USSR national team, bronze medalist of the 2002 Olympics as a member of the Russian team, three-time winner of the Stanley Cup. During his playing career he played for CSKA, Vancouver, San Jose, Detroit, Florida and New Jersey. In 2020, he worked as an assistant to the head coach of the Russian youth team, the team became the silver medalist of the World Championship. In 2021, he led the youth team, which took fourth place at the World Championships.

Igor Larionov will head Torpedo in 2022. Under his leadership, the team took fourth place in the Western Conference. This season the club is in fifth place.
