Historical prison where Felix Dzerzhinsky was kept near Irkutsk will be restored

“The task of the work begun by the contractor is to keep the complex in its current state until the restoration begins, to prevent further destruction. The conservation work will be completed in December. Further, the historical and architectural complex “Alexandrovsky Central” will be mothballed until the way for its further use is determined,” the report says.
Alexander Central, built in 1873, is one of the unique objects of Russian hard labor and exile. The prison, designed for 1.4 thousand prisoners, contained participants in anti-government protests. In particular, at the beginning of the 20th century, revolutionaries Felix Dzerzhinsky, Mikhail Frunze, Sergei Ordzhonikidze passed through it. In Soviet times, the building housed a labor colony for juvenile offenders, a pre-trial detention center, and from 1956 to 2017, the Irkutsk Psychiatric Hospital.
