Tanzania has installed high-speed Internet on Mount Kilimanjaro, which will allow anyone with a smartphone to share their emotions about their ascent of Africa’s highest mountain on social networks.
The State Telecommunications Corporation of Tanzania installed a broadband network on Tuesday at an altitude of 3,720 meters. The Minister of Information of the country, Nape Nahuye, called this event historic. “Before, visitors and porters had to get up and work without internet. It was dangerous for them,” the official said at the opening ceremony of the network. He added that by the end of the year, the Internet will also be connected to the top of the mountain with a height of 5895 m.
Mount Kilimanjaro is an important source of tourism revenue in Tanzania and Kenya. About 35,000 people try to reach its summit every year. The mountain is part of the national park of the same name, which, in 1987, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
