An Osprey military helicopter carrying about 20 US Marines crashed during an exercise off the coast of Darwin, informed TV channel Sky News Australia, citing sources.

According to the channel, the helicopter crashed around 11:00 local time near Melville Island during the Predators Run exercise, which involves personnel from Australia, the United States, Indonesia, the Philippines and Timor-Leste.

The Australian Defense Ministry said there were no Australians on board at the time of the crash.

CareFlight planes flew to the crash site to carry out the rescue operation. The exercise, in which more than 2,500 troops are taking part, will be suspended after the helicopter crash, Sky News notes.
