Head of the IOC: a possible boycott of the 2024 Olympics by Ukraine does not correspond to the mission of the committee

President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach spoke in favor of the return of Russian athletes to world sports. He stated that a possible boycott of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris by Ukraine does not correspond to the committee’s mission. Mr. Bach added that the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes is still “under discussion.”
“This is not in line with the values and mission of the Olympic Charter to exclude athletes because of their passport,” Bach said on the sidelines of the World Luge Championships in Oberhof (quoted from Spiegel). “Perhaps Russian and Belarusian athletes could compete under a neutral flag at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.”
The mission of the International Olympic Committee is to “bring together all athletes from all over the world, this is a special symbol of the Olympic Games,” said the head of the IOC.
“A possible boycott by Ukraine, which was threatened by the Minister of Sports Vadim Gutzeit on Facebook (the social network is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation.— “b”), in this case does not correspond to our mission. We know the point of view of Ukraine, which not only wants to isolate Russia as a state, but also wants to completely isolate all Russians,” said Thomas Bach.
He believes that it is necessary to maintain solidarity with Ukrainian athletes, but individual athletes should not be discriminated against by exclusion, “even if countries are in a state of conflict.”
Former President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky informed, which is disappointed with the statements of the head of the IOC about the need to allow all athletes, including Russian ones, to compete. He invited Mr. Bach to visit Bakhmut (Artemovsk).
