Harry Kane breaks Bundesliga goalscoring record

English forward Harry Kane, who has become one of the revelations of the current football season, has adorned it with outstanding achievements. Having scored his 31st goal in the current German championship against the Darmstadt club, the striker, bought last summer by Bayern, became the Bundesliga record holder for goals in the tournament in his debut season, and at the same time slightly improved his personal highest figure for goals in within the framework of a separate national championship. True, how many more of them will be on Kane’s account in the spring will depend on how serious the leg injury he inopportunely received at the end of the match.
This match of the 26th round of the German championship could have turned out to be a completely ordinary event. The main giant of German football, Bayern, played away against Darmstadt, which occupies the lowest place in the table. The Munich team, who seem to be gradually emerging from the crisis that overtook them at the turn of winter and spring, naturally won convincingly – 5:2. So nothing interesting. Especially considering that gold for Bayern still looks like an unattainable goal. Breakaway “Bayer”which beat Freiburg in this round, is too big.
But leading publications from countries that are no strangers to Harry Kane paid a lot of attention to him, accompanying publications dedicated to the meeting with photographs of the English forward. Moreover, the key photos were completely different in nature. Some showed a triumphant Kane, others showed Kane sitting on the lawn next to the Bayern medical staff, writhing in pain, holding his left leg below the knee. But everything is clear. Both episodes seemed very significant.
In the first case, we are talking about a header before the break, with which Harry Kane brought Bayern, which was inferior in the score at the beginning of the match, ahead – 2:1. It was the 31st for the forward in the current championship and brought him two notable statistical achievements at once.
In the summer of 2023, Bayern acquired Kane from Tottenham, where the 30-year-old footballer spent almost his entire professional career, for a gigantic amount of money for thrifty German football – €100 million. But the amount did not particularly surprise anyone.
In the end, Munich bought a player who had earned a reputation as a phenomenal sniper.
But in the English Championship, even though he already had it, Kane reached this beautiful mark of 30 goals only twice – in 2018 and right before moving to Bayern, without ever overcoming it. And here he managed to overcome it, despite the fact that, in fact, experts assumed that the Englishman would take some time to adapt to the new league. It seems like not a day has passed. It should be taken into account that the English top division is slightly, by two teams, larger than the German one and, therefore, each participant plays four more matches per tournament.
The second achievement is associated with a much longer history. The Bundesliga, a professional top division that unites various regional championships in Germany, originated in 1963. And in the first season of its existence, the title of top scorer of the championship went to the already famous Hamburg forward Uwe Seeler by that time. He scored exactly 30 goals.
Since then, for six decades, none of the Bundesliga newcomers, no matter what credentials they possessed, have managed to surpass the bar set by Seeler.
The English newcomer has surpassed, who is not so far from the Bundesliga scoring record, not associated with any clarifications, the “pure” record. It belongs to the excellent Polish sniper Robert Lewandowski, who currently plays for Barcelona and previously scored for Bayern. In 2021, he raised the bar set in 1972 by another great representative of the Munich club, Gerd Müller. Muller had 40 goals, Lewandowski sent one more goal into the opponents’ net.
And now the second set of photographs from the Bayern match with Darmstadt was directly related to the prospects of Harry Kane fighting in an absentee duel with the Pole. At the end of the match, while chasing the ball, he fell unsuccessfully and crashed into the post. It immediately became obvious that something quite serious had happened. Kane could not get up from the ground for a long time, and when he got up, he limped.
Bayern, however, preferred to refrain from making predictions about the forward’s condition over the weekend. And her mentor Thomas Tuchel only confirmed that he sprained his ankle, also without indicating the possible time frame for his recovery and, apparently, in his heart he thanked fate for the fact that the injury overtook Kane, strictly speaking, in a period favorable for this kind of trouble. The fact is that this week another window for national team matches opens, and the German championship, like everyone else in Europe, is going on a two-week break.
