Hamas has announced its most significant loss of cultural heritage in the Gaza Strip. According to the movement, as a result of Israeli strikes, the Great Mosque of Omar, built more than one and a half thousand years ago, was destroyed. This was reported by Al Ghad TV channel.
Hamas-controlled media published photographs of the destroyed building. They show the collapsed roof and walls, as well as the cracked base of the minaret. However, the exact time of photographing the mosque is unknown.
The Great Mosque of Omar is also called the Great Mosque of Gaza. It is considered the oldest and largest mosque in the enclave. The Great Mosque of Gaza was rebuilt from an old Christian temple in the fifth century AD.
Reuters cites the reaction of residents who have lived next to the Muslim shrine for a long time. For example, 45-year-old tailor Ahmed Nemer called the destruction of the mosque an attempt to erase Palestinian memories.
In total, since the beginning of the conflict, according to Hamas, one hundred and four mosques have been destroyed in the Gaza Strip.
