Hainan Island and Tibet are locked down

Thousands of Chinese tourists are stranded in Tibet as authorities in the region struggle to contain a new outbreak of COVID-19.
As many cities were quarantined, Chinese tourists flocked to scenic spots such as Hainan Island and the western region of Tibet.
However, in recent weeks, the number of new cases of coronavirus infection in these areas has increased. Sanya, a port city on the southern tip of Hainan Island, which is called the “Chinese Hawaii”, was closed on August 4, as a result of which more than 80 thousand tourists were blocked on the island.
Earlier this month, Tibet reported new infections for the first time since 2020. Mass testing was carried out in the largest cities – Lhasa and Shigatse.
This week, thousands of tourists have been barred from sightseeing and even returning home until they test negative for coronavirus, according to Chinese publication Caixin. It is also reported that the premises in which people are quarantined are overcrowded.
State broadcaster CCTV confirms this by saying that Hainan provincial authorities are arranging additional flights for tourists to bring them home after several negative COVID-19 tests.
A similar operation was carried out in the beach resort of Sanya, from where a plane was sent with 125 tourists stuck in the resort since Saturday due to quarantine.
