Gynecologist Melanya Mailyan told Lenta.ru, how contraceptives interact with alcohol.
Mailyan noted that alcohol and oral contraceptives put a lot of stress on the liver, and contraceptives can simply be absorbed worse. According to the gynecologist, estrogen and progesterone are used in the production of oral contraceptives, and the drug is metabolized in the liver – in the same place where alcohol is.
A large amount of alcohol, however, like any dose of alcohol, slows down the breakdown of the substance in the liver and increases the load on the body.
This means that the effectiveness of contraceptives depends on the amount of alcohol consumed. If there is a lot of alcohol in the body, then contraceptives will not have time to act on time, since the liver will process alcohol.
So, Mailyan does not recommend combining oral contraceptives with alcohol, but if there are three to six hours between taking pills and drinking alcohol, then this is acceptable.
