Gymnast Polstyanaya, suspended from the World Championship, refused to compete for Latvia

19-year-old gymnast Elizaveta Polstyanaya, who is a native of Latvia, sent an official letter to the Latvian Gymnastics Federation (LVF). In it, she informed the leadership of the organization that she would no longer be able to play for the national team of the Baltic state.
Recall that Elizaveta Polstyanaya was born in Jurmala in a family of Russian parents. She began to practice rhythmic gymnastics at the age of 7 in Moscow. In 2018, Polstyanaya received Latvian citizenship and began to play for Latvia. This year she was banned from training in Russia. He has been playing for the national team of the Baltic state since 2019.
“Amendments to the law adopted by the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK) on May 18, 2022 regarding athletes with Russian citizenship do not allow further progress towards my goal of qualifying and participating in the Olympic Games,” Polstyanaya emphasized in her message. – Throughout my sports career, the family fully financed my activities. Getting into the Latvian Olympic team allowed only partially to remove the financial burden from it. Deprivation of funding would never be the reason for the abandonment of my goal. The gymnast added that it is clear to everyone, including the representatives of the LVF, that she would not be allowed to take part in qualifying competitions and in the Olympics. In this regard, as well as due to the limitations of her sports activities and the current situation of misunderstanding, Polstyanaya no longer sees the possibility of continuing her sports career in Latvia.
Earlier, the gymnast published a message on the social network, in which she said that she would not be able to take part in the World Championships. The day before, she reported that the National Olympic Committee of Latvia forced her to renounce Russian citizenship so that she could go as part of the country’s rhythmic gymnastics team to the World Championships, which will be held in September in Bulgaria.
