UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will discuss plans to revive the grain deal with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as well as the Presidents of Ukraine and Turkey, Vladimir Zelensky and Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to him, he will hold personal meetings with them next week.

“I continue to be focused on doing everything possible to restart the Black Sea Grain Initiative, export Ukrainian food, and continue our work to ease sanctions on Russian products and fertilizers,” – noted Guterres (quote from TASS).

The UN Secretary General stressed that he will meet with each of the three politicians separately as part of the high-level week of the General Assembly, which will take place from September 19 to 23.

Earlier, Guterres demanded to stop attacking civilian ships in the Black Sea. He also emphasized that attacks on ports interfere with the resumption of the grain deal and reduce the motivation of other countries to participate in the export of Russian food.

The grain deal ceased to operate on July 18. Russia has informed Turkey, Ukraine and the UN of its reluctance to extend it. President Vladimir Putin previously said Western countries were not fulfilling their obligations to Russia under the deal, despite calls from the UN. He also reported that most of the grain from Ukraine was received by high-income countries, although the purpose of the deal was to provide food to countries in need.
