Gunzburg expects faster evolution of coronavirus

The appearance of a variant of the omicron strain XBB.1.5 (“kraken”) indicates an acceleration in the evolution of coronavirus, said Alexander Gintsburg, director of the Gamaleya Center. He noted that the new strain appeared during recombination – “two different strains of coronavirus met in a cell, exchanged genetic material, that is, RNA, with each other.”
“The same thing happens when a man and a woman meet, and children are born, which, accordingly, give a new combination: on the one hand, children are similar to their parents, and at the same time not very much, with new properties. <...> This suggests that the evolution of the virus will now go much faster, and the diversity that we will face will be even greater,” said Mr. Gunzburg TASS. In his opinion, the properties of new viruses will also change rapidly, so the incidence may increase.
Rospotrebnadzor recorded the first case of Kraken infection in Russia on January 12. According to the head of the department, Anna Popova, immune protection after suffering a coronavirus may not be enough with a new sub-variant of the omicron strain. Specialists of the Gamaleya Center started developing a new vaccine against COVID-19 that will provide protection against new strains of coronavirus, including XBB.1.5.
