Guardian: Supercolonies of red fire ants could take over European cities

Publication columnist Guardian Patrick Barkham reported that European countries are currently threatened by an invasion of red fire ants.
According to him, the red fire ant Solenopsis invicta can damage agricultural crops, as well as various electrical equipment.
“This species of ant has a powerful sting that can damage crops and a variety of equipment, including computers and cars,” Barkham said.
He clarified that these ants have now taken root in Italy and can quickly “take over” the whole of Europe. They are facilitated by weather conditions, in particular global warming.
The journalist added that the spread of Solenopsis invicta is always accompanied by a serious reduction in the diversity and abundance of local flora and fauna.
