Guardian: Israel must destroy Gaza to defeat Hamas

Former director of the Middle East department at the European External Action Service Nicholas Westcott in conversation with the newspaper Guardian stated that Israel would need to destroy the Gaza Strip to completely defeat Hamas.
He clarified that Israel’s “moral position” is currently weakened by the continuation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, the residents of Israel themselves understand that the possibilities for “retribution” are significantly limited.
“I think the problem is that Israel cannot destroy Hamas without destroying the Gaza Strip. And if Israeli representatives destroy Gaza, they risk undermining international support for Israel itself,” Westcott said.
According to him, Hamas is so well rooted in society that the IDF’s military actions only increase its support among the local population.
