The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) did not expect that Russian troops would be able to break through the front in the Kharkiv region. This is reported by the British newspaper The Guardian. According to Kyiv’s expectations, this should not have happened.
It is specified that the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was designed to force the Russian army to go on the defensive, however, in the first half of this month, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation switched to offensive operations on Kupyansk and its environs.
“The Ukrainians were taken by surprise, and the front moved,” the publication says.
It is noted that the Ukrainian military command fears the destruction of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Kupyansk by Russian troops, as was the case in Artemovsk (Bakhmut) in the spring.
