Grossi left for Ukraine to meet with Zelensky and visit the ZNPP

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi on Twitter said that he had left for Ukraine, where he plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, visit the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, and also present a program of assistance in eliminating the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam.

Grossi wrote that he intended to assess the situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP and rotate the specialists of the IAEA mission.

On June 7, the day after the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region broke, Grossi said that every hour the water level in the reservoirs of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant drops by 5-7 cm. In this regard, in the medium term, the plant may be left without water for cooling, which would damage the reactors, he said.

The head of the agency said that the IAEA would increase the number of its inspectors at the ZNPP. Grossi explained this decision by the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and the need to implement a plan to ensure the safety of the plant. He did not name the exact number of inspectors who will arrive at the Zaporozhye NPP. It will depend on the assessment of the situation, he added. Earlier, Advisor to the Director General of Rosenergoatom Renat Karchaa said that the number of IAEA inspectors at the station would be increased several times.

On the night of June 6, about 150 km from the ZNPP, the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station was blown up. As a result of the incident, an uncontrolled discharge of water began, the level of which reached about 11 m. Earlier, a local emergency regime was introduced on the territory of the district, and an emergency regime was also introduced on the territory of the Kherson region.
