Grossi appointed IAEA director general for second term

The IAEA Board of Governors has approved the candidacy of Rafael Grossia for the post of Director General of the organization for a second term. Mikhail Ulyanov, Permanent Representative of Russia to the International Organizations in Vienna, announced this.
“The IAEA Board of Governors has appointed Rafael Mariano Grossi as Director General of the agency for a second term, until December 2, 2027,” he tweeted.
Rafael Grossi has served as Director General of the IAEA since December 3, 2019. Prior to his appointment, he was Chairman of the 2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
From 2014 to 2016, Grossi served as Chairman of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). Prior to that, he was Assistant Director General for Policy and Chief of Staff for three years at the IAEA. In addition, during his 35 years as a diplomat in the field of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, Grossi has held various positions in the Argentine Foreign Ministry.
Since the beginning of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the IAEA Director General has been actively involved in discussing nuclear safety issues at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which is under the control of the Russian Federation. For the past few months, Grossi has been promoting the idea of creating a protective zone around the station due to shelling from the Ukrainian side. On the eve of March 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov informedthat the countries approached an agreement on this initiative, but it was blocked by the Ukrainian authorities.
