Gref spoke about new terminals with biometrics at the opening of Sberbank in Crimea

In 2024, Sberbank plans to significantly expand the number of terminals with the function of paying with facial biometrics. The details were announced by the head of the credit institution, German Gref, as part of the opening ceremony of the bank’s head office in Crimea.

“Today, 200 thousand terminals are installed in the country. By the end of this year, a million terminals will be installed throughout the country… Therefore, people will not need to worry about carrying a bank card with them – it becomes an anachronism, or a telephone. You can simply come, smile at the terminal and make a purchase in the store, withdraw cash if needed, or perform any transaction. We are the only bank in the world that has done this,” said the head of Sberbank, German Gref, explaining that facial recognition in 2D technology is carried out by the bank.

The head of the credit institution emphasized that financial profitability is very important in creating terminals. “We also make the terminals ourselves; it was very important to make them pay for themselves. Today the entire set has been brought to an acceptable price. At one time, we created the main invention that went around the world – we connected a bank account number, which no one can remember, with a mobile phone number. And they began to make transfers using a mobile phone number,” continued German Gref.

The opening of the bank’s head office in Crimea was attended by the head of the republic, Sergei Aksenov. The organization noted that the bank’s plans for 2024 are to increase its presence in the region. In the first year of the company’s operation on the peninsula, it reached 12%. The organization’s press service explained that today there are 14 offices and 130 ATMs operating in Crimea. The bank announced the start of work on the Crimean Peninsula in January 2023.

“This year we plan to open about 10 more offices, double the number of our ATMs and at least double our market share here. The most important thing is that lending rates in Crimea fell sharply after our arrival. And all banks are now forced to reach out to our services. Because the services that we offer in Crimea are no different from the services that we provide in Moscow or in any other locality in our country,” summed up German Gref.
