Gref estimated the shortage of IT specialists at 1 million people

The personnel shortage in the IT industry is 1 million people; this problem will not be solved in the coming years. This opinion was expressed by the Chairman of the Board of Sberbank, German Gref, at the opening of the School 21 campus.

“Today, the shortage of specialists in the IT field is estimated at more than 1 million people. And this deficit will not be covered in the coming years,” he said (quote according to TASS).

Moreover, Gref continued, according to Sber’s estimates for the next five to six years, the deficit will only grow. According to him, artificial intelligence can replace IT specialists in all areas without exception. Gref noted that “very big changes” in the labor market will occur in the next two to three years.

In mid-August, the Ministry of Digital Development appreciated The shortage of IT personnel in Russia is 500,000 – 700,000 people. The need for personnel remains, despite the increase in the personnel base, said the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadayev.

In December 2022, the Minister saidthat during two waves of emigration after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, about 100,000 IT specialists left Russia and did not return. This is 10% of the total number of employees in the industry. Shadayev noted that 80% of them continue to work for Russian companies in friendly countries.
