Greek citizen arrested in Austria on suspicion of spying for Russia

In Austria, officers of the special forces unit “Cobra” detained a Greek citizen of “Russian origin”, informs German newspaper Kurier. The 39-year-old man is suspected of spying for Russia.
According to the newspaper, the detained man is the son of a former employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, who worked as a diplomat in Austria and Germany while serving.
A search was conducted at the suspect’s home in Vienna, during which listening devices, tablets, mobile phones and laptops were found. The Austrian State Security and Intelligence Directorate learned about the contacts of the man with employees and diplomats of different states. The detained Greek citizen is also suspected of disclosing state secrets.
On August 11, 2021, David Smith, a former employee of the British Embassy in Berlin, was detained in Germany. In November 2022 he acknowledged guilt.
In November, the Swedish Security Police (SEPO) arrested two people on suspicion of spying for Russia. It was noted that those arrested were a married couple of emigrants from Russia. According to the documents of the Stockholm District Court, those arrested were allegedly engaged in espionage for the Russian Federation since 2013. One of them is suspected of “illegal intelligence activities”, the second of complicity in a crime. Later the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Sweden let go one of two suspects of spying for Russia.
