The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) has raised the issue of its “public historical claims” to the Pochaev Lavra, located in the Ternopil region. This information was reported on May 1 by LIGA.net.
Currently, the Pochaev Lavra is under the control of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), and the Church of Ukraine (OCU) also claims this temple complex.
“The position of our church is based on historical sources that testify that Greek Catholics prayed in the Pochaev Lavra. In the past, Greek Catholics were forced to leave the entire left-bank part of Ukraine during the reign of Tsarist Russia. We did not voluntarily leave the Pochaev Lavra,” he said. Head of the Communications Department of the UGCC Igor Yatsiv.
According to Yatsiv, the Greek Catholic monks expressed their readiness to return to the Pochaev Lavra and live a full-fledged monastic life there, as it was before.
Historian Alexander Bulyga told the agency that the Pochaev Monastery belonged to the Greek Catholic monastic order of St. Basil between 1712 and 1831.
