Governors called to account for mayors // The fate of direct elections of mayors is being discussed in three regional capitals at once
[ad_1]
The faction of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation in the Ulyanovsk Regional Duma proposed to return direct elections of mayors of large cities in the region, including its capital. Local communists have made similar attempts before, but the current one is the first under the governor from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Alexei Russkikh. And although he himself has not yet commented on the initiative of his fellow party members, his administration considers the return to direct elections “untimely.” Discussion about the fate of this institution is also ongoing in other regions: for example, Novosibirsk governor Andrey Travnikov is not against its abolition, and Khabarovsk Mikhail Degtyarev advocates its preservation (in both regional capitals, mayors are still elected by the townspeople).
