Governor of Karelia Parfenchikov proposed to rename Sortavala to Serdobol

The Governor of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov proposed returning the city of Sortavala to its former name Serdobol, Karel Inform reports.

Parfenchikov voiced this proposal at the awards ceremony for the participants of the NWO.

“Sortavala is not a Finnish city, but a former Serdobol,” the governor said.

He added that “Kurkieki is the ancient capital of Kiryazh.” Parfenchikov stressed: “This is our historical memory.”

Sortavala is located in the south-west of Karelia, located on the northern shore of Lake Ladoga, not far from the city – the border with Finland.

The name Sortavala about 1000 years ago was given to the area in the vicinity of the city, indicated on the website of the administration of the Sortaval region. Karelians lived in these parts at that time. The Novgorodians, who traded with the Karelians, called the area Serdovol. In the XIV century, Serdovolye became the center of the Nikolsko-Servolovsky churchyard (an administrative-territorial unit in Rus’).

In the XIV century, the churchyard passed to the Moscow principality, and in the middle of the XVII century, after these lands were conquered by Sweden, the city of Sotravala was founded.

In 1721, the city, which had already become a village, passed to Russia under the Nishtad peace treaty under the name Serdobol. In 1783, Serdobol again received the status of a city.

The word Serdobol meant “relatives”.

In 1917, the city went to Finland, which separated from the Russian Empire, and was again renamed Sortavala.

In 1940, Sortavala, together with Karelia, was ceded to the Soviet Union following the results of the Soviet-Finnish war.

During the Great Patriotic War, the city of Sortavala was first captured by Finland, and then liberated by the Red Army, its name has survived to this day.
