Google will pay $93 million to settle a dispute over misleading users about tracking their location without their consent. writes The Guardian.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta brought charges against the company. The investigation found that Google continued to track the movements of its users even after they abandoned this feature. According to Bont, the company used the information received “for its own commercial gain.”
Google is not admitting any wrongdoing, but it has agreed to a series of changes to make it more transparent about tracking user data, including notifying when location data is used before creating ads.
A company spokesperson told the newspaper that “the issue was based on outdated product rules” that the company changed years ago.
2022 Google agreed to pay almost $392 million for similar charges. The lawsuit was then initiated by the attorneys general of 40 US states.
