Globe and Mail: landlords in Canada “use” Ukrainian refugees

Newspaper Globe and Mail reported that landlords in Canada “use” Ukrainian refugees, demanding from them a deposit for housing for several months in advance.
Galina Durisivit, who arrived in Canada in March with her son, said she had been looking for an apartment in Toronto for several months. The woman regularly responded to various housing options, but always “bumped into a wall.”
The landlords asked the woman and child to pay six months in advance. However, such actions are prohibited by local laws. As a result, the woman was able to rent a house for herself, but she will be able to move into it only in January.
“I apply after application, but everywhere I get rejected. It is likely that this is due to the lack of credit history and the fact that she has only recently started working,” Durisvit said.
According to the publication, Durisvit is “not alone” in this matter. Some of the Ukrainian refugees cannot find a place to live, because apartment owners require a deposit for rent for six months or more.
