Gerontologists have found out how yoga affects the elderly

Researchers at Harvard Medical School in the US have found that yoga can help older people regain leg strength and improve walking speed. The study was published in the scientific journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
Scientists conducted a meta-analysis of 33 clinical trials that showed a positive effect on the well-being of older people after yoga.
Notably, yoga was not the only way to improve musculoskeletal health in the elderly. For example, tai chi exercises have been observed to reduce subjects’ risk of accidental falls.
However, the main effect of yoga was on the strength of the legs in the elderly, highlighting the importance of maintaining the muscles of the lower body in an effective condition: leg diseases are more likely to put older people at risk of disability, as well as falls and hospitalization.
The only drawback of the analysis, the scientists noted, was the heterogeneity of the studies, since in some cases, elderly people from the nursing home took part in the observations, and in others, they lived on their own. The level of well-being of the subjects also differed: someone was relatively healthy, and someone had arthritis or Parkinson’s disease.
