Germany urged to repair Nord Stream

The blown-up Nord Stream pipeline needs to be repaired or at least mothballed in the near future, otherwise it may be completely destroyed by corrosion, declared Prime Minister of Saxony (Germany) Michael Kretschmer to the publication Wirtschaftswoche.

“This is necessary because this infrastructure can provide our energy supply in five or ten years. If not repaired soon, the pipeline will be permanently destroyed by corrosion. It is located in international waters and off the Danish coast, so it is available,” said the German politician.

He added that Nord Stream is one of the tools that allows diversifying energy supplies to Germany, and the suspension of Russian gas exports has already led to the disruption of the energy transition, which meant the rejection of nuclear energy and coal in favor of gas generation.

According to Kretschmer, now it is necessary to at least pump out water from the gas pipeline and close it so that it remains safe for some time.

On the night of September 26, 2022, pressure dropped on the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, and later two leaks were discovered, which were located in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Sweden, and two more in the Danish EEZ. Then it was found that the pipelines were blown up, only one of the Nord Stream 2 lines survived, but it is not used for gas supplies, since Germany did not allow the pipeline to be put into operation after its construction was completed.

At the end of last year, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Novak said that the technical capabilities for the repair of Nord Stream exist, but this will require money and time. At the same time, the investigation of the explosions has not yet led to a result, periodic Western media publish notes that Ukraine could be behind this – this version was refuted in the Kremlin.

Journalist Seymour Hersh claims that the United States and Norway were involved in the incident. The White House and the European Commission called this information unreliable. Russian President Vladimir Putin, a few days after the explosion in the fall of 2022, blamed the “Anglo-Saxons” for what happened.
