Germany rejects accusations of blocking financial assistance package to Ukraine

Germany has rejected accusations of blocking the promotion of an EU macroeconomic assistance package for Ukraine in the amount of 8 billion euros, Bloomberg reports citing a source in the German Finance Ministry.
According to the interlocutor of the agency, Germany has already allocated grants in the amount of 1 billion euros to ensure the liquidity of the Ukrainian state budget and intends to support Ukraine in the future. At the same time, Germany called for part of the emergency aid package to be provided in the form of grants rather than loans.
On August 2, Deputy Head of the Office of the Ukrainian President Igor Zhovkva said that Germany was blocking the allocation of financial assistance from the European Union. On May 18, the European Commission announced the preparation of an emergency macro-financial lending program for Ukraine in the amount of 9 billion euros under EU guarantees until the end of 2022. The 1 billion euro package that Ukraine has already received became the first tranche under this program.
On July 7, Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that the budget arm of the European Commission had blocked a €1.5 billion loan to Ukraine from a €9 billion package due to concerns about its financial soundness. On July 10, Corriere della Sera reported that the German authorities had been blocking the adoption of the EU aid package for Ukraine for 9 billion euros for more than a month.
