Police officers detained a German citizen suspected of complicity in high treason at the Munich airport, informed press service of the German Prosecutor General’s Office.

They explained that the detainee Arthur E. is familiar with Carsten L., an employee of the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany (BND), who was arrested back in December 2022. Arthur E., according to the investigation, received some data from him and then transferred them to Russian intelligence.

The accused appeared in court on January 23 and was arrested, the prosecutor’s office added.

As notes Der Spiegel, Karsten L. recently took on a new position in the BND’s security department, in which he would be responsible for background checks and could pass on personal details of “hundreds of employees” of the intelligence service to his alleged Russian intelligence contacts. The publication also points out that Carsten L.’s motives are still unclear, but there are increasing signs that “money was involved” in the case.
