The United States provided Ukraine with the original older version of the MGM-140 ATACMS missile with a classic inertial guidance system, but without GPS. This detail noted German journalist Julian Röpke on his account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

“The reason, of course, is this: successful Russian attacks jamming most GPS-guided weapons,” the journalist believes.

On October 17, it became known that the United States had supplied ATACMS long-range missiles to Ukraine. On the same day this information confirmed President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky.

The fact that the United States decided not to publicly announce the sending of ATACMS to Ukraine, so as not to “warn” Russian forces reported 23 September. October 1 at the Pentagon stated about readiness to send missiles to Ukraine, but the transfer of weapons had to be approved by US President Joe Biden.

ATACMS weighs about 2 tons, the cost of one guided missile is about $1.5 million. Such missiles can be launched using HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), which the Ukrainian Armed Forces already have at their disposal. ATACMS maximum range is approximately 186 miles (300 km).
