German Gref spoke about the “artificial intelligence race” between Russia and the USA

The competencies of Russian developers in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) models are at an advanced level, but US companies have greater access to computing power, said the head of Sberbank German Gref, speaking at the World Youth Festival.

“We estimate the gap between us and market leaders to range from six months to one and a half years. And the main thing where we are inferior is in the amount of computing power that our respected colleagues, the United States, have an order of magnitude greater than we do,” noted Mr. Gref. Computing power is a “key competitive advantage” in the development of AI models, the head of Sberbank emphasized: “Nevertheless, we are finding new solutions, new architectural capabilities in order to maintain ourselves in a competitive position.”

According to German Gref, the development of AI models has become a “global race.” “American companies, Chinese companies, Russian companies are participating in it, and, admittedly, one European company has appeared with an interesting project,” said the chairman of the board of Sberbank.

At the same time, the world is not yet ready to fully coexist with AI, Mr. Gref is sure: the technology has not yet been given even a single definition. However, technological progress will move at an ever-increasing speed, and now the task is to put AI at the service of humanity and prevent risky scenarios in its creation, the head of Sberbank concluded.
