German Defense Minister: EU is preparing to end US military support for Ukraine

Europe is preparing for the fact that Ukraine may lose US military support and will need to be compensated, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.
“Of course, we talk about it. We clearly understand that probably sooner or later we will have to compensate for something that may no longer come from Washington,” he said.
Pistorius also admitted that there are areas in which this will be difficult to do. In particular, it will not be possible to quickly increase the volume of weapons production.
“We now have about five to eight years of catching up to do, both in the military, in industry, and in society. Putin is now significantly increasing arms production – we are talking about an increase of 60%,” said the German Defense Minister.
In addition, according to Pistorius, the Bundeswehr suffers from an acute shortage of personnel. In his opinion, the suspension of conscription for military service in Germany was a mistake. Germany is now exploring models of compulsory service. This includes the model used in Sweden, where “all young women and men are brought together and only a select portion of them undergo basic military service.”
“That’s part of the consideration of whether something similar is possible for us. All options are being explored,” Pistorius said.
