Studies of the Australian black swan genome have shown that these birds do not have genes that help other birds protect themselves from infectious diseases. The fact is that these swans, which were in geographic isolation for a long time, have lost their immune diversity.
Scientists noted that black swans are most sensitive to HPAI bird flu – so much so that birds can die from it within just three days.
Note that the HPAI bird flu is absent in Australia, but nothing prevents it from spreading to other continents. So, for example, the virus found in Asia already feels comfortable in North America, Europe, North Africa and South America.
