Gennady Krasnikov elected new head of RAS

Academician Gennady Krasnikov, General Director of JSC Research Institute of Molecular Electronics, won the election of the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). About it informed Chairman of the Counting Commission Dmitry Novikov. In addition to Mr. Krasnikov, the director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science, the Institute of Thermal Physics named after V.I. S. S. Kutateladze SB RAS, academician Dmitry Markovich. The day before, the acting president of the academy, Alexander Sergeev, withdrew his candidacy from the elections due to “pressure”.
According to the results of voting within the framework of the general meeting of members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennady Krasnikov scored 871 votes, Dmitry Markovich – 397 votes. 122 ballots were declared invalid. The elections were recognized as valid, since by the second day of the general meeting 1070 members of the RAS had registered to participate in the secret ballot. Thus, the necessary quorum was collected. The minimum number of voting participants is 1005 out of 2008 members of the RAS.
“I would like to become the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences for each of you. I would also like to express my great gratitude to Alexander Mikhailovich Sergeyev, who worked as president for five years in difficult times and did everything to make our academy flourish,” said Mr. Krasnikov in his welcoming speech.
The President of the Russian Academy of Sciences is elected for a term of five years. The same person cannot be elected more than twice in a row. The elected President of the Russian Academy of Sciences is approved in office and dismissed by the President of Russia.
Yesterday, September 19, the current President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev, who has held this position since 2017 stripped off his candidacy from the election of a new head of the academy. He called his decision forced and referred to pressure. Members of the informal academic “July 1 Club” declared that “the most important principle of the RAS activity is democracy”, and the vote “is turned into a farce, participation in which would be humiliating for members of the RAS”.
