Brigadier General Gennady Shapovalov has been appointed the new commander of the Operational Command “South” of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This was reported on the page of OK “Yug” on social networks. This happened after Andrei Kovalchuk was dismissed from this position.

The new commander was introduced to the personnel by the commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Alexander Pavlyuk.

According to official information from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Gennady Shapovalov was born in 1978 in the Kirovograd region. He graduated from the Institute of Tank Forces at the Kharkov State Polytechnic University in 2000, and also from the Command and Staff Institute for the Use of NBU Forces in 2012.

Shapovalov also studied at the US Army War College.

Previously, he commanded a separate motorized infantry brigade named after. Yakov Handzyuk received the rank of brigadier general in March 2022.
