Already significantly reduced since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24, the volumes of Russian gas delivered by Gazprom to Engie represented just under 4% of its total supplies, or 1.5 terawatt-hours. (TWh), before the cut. A figure to relate to supplies “annual totals in Europe above 400 TWh” for Engie, according to the main gas supplier in France, of which the State holds nearly 24%.
At the end of July, Engie had already assured that it had significantly reduced its exposure to Russian gas. “It is completely within the margin of the flexibility of our portfolios, so we are not at all worried”, said its director general, Catherine MacGregor. The multinational assured that it had anticipated this scenario by putting in place measures to be able to supply its customers, including in the event of an interruption in Gazprom flows.

On the government side, the situation is also being played down. “France has been preparing for this scenario since the spring: the filling of gas stocks should reach its maximum in about two weeks”said Agnès-Pannier Runacher, the French Minister for Energy Transition, in a press release published in the evening. “We have diversified our imports so that we are no longer dependent on Russian gas for more than 9% [contre 17 % avant la guerre] », she added. The day before, the French Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, wanting “reassure Engie customers”had for his part affirmed on the TMC channel that the French group had “found other sources of supply”.
