The most harmful foods for the liver named in an interview with Moslenta, gastroenterologist Valery Lomova.
In the first place, according to her, are alcoholic beverages.
“Today, alcohol is recognized as the most harmful product for the liver,” Lomova said.
She explained that “ethanol, which is part of alcohol, directly damages liver cells, causing liver fibrosis, which can later turn into cirrhosis.”
It is harmful for the liver to eat fatty meat. The doctor noted a high fat content in lamb, pork, goose and duck. It can be deposited in the liver and cause its obesity. It is better to eat beef, chicken, veal and turkey, the expert recommended.
Lomova also advises adding fatty, spicy, pickled foods, convenience foods, foods with a lot of salt and sugar, dyes and flavors to the list of foods harmful to the liver.
She explained that with excessive salt intake, fluid retention occurs and the risk of damage to liver cells – hepatocytes – increases. The norm per day is no more than 5 grams of salt.
And eating sugar can lead to steatosis, in which fat accumulates in the liver, the specialist explained.
