The idea of merging the worlds of cars and smartphones is increasingly finding real confirmation. I have already talked about this more than once. Sony has shown that gaming industry technologies are no less successfully integrated into a car, or rather an electric car. Representatives of Sony and Honda Mobility rolled out their joint development, the Afeela electric car, onto the stage remotely, using the DualSense controller from the PlayStation 5 game console.
We have to stand out because there are more and more battery-powered cars every day, and this kind of synergy is better than nothing at all. Especially considering that this is not the first time Sony has demonstrated the model itself. But it now has quite a lot in common with your home console, the PlayStation 5. Mostly it’s Unreal Engine 5.3, powered by Epic Games. Here they are – engines that replaced internal combustion engines.
Sony’s electric car will need a graphics engine to create three-dimensional visual effects that the driver and passengers will see on the dashboard displays. According to the developers, Unreal Engine will work with detailed 3D maps, virtual spaces, augmented reality, which can also be overlaid with metadata from the Internet.
Afeela’s driver assistance systems, which work largely through cameras, that is, with visual information, will also interact with Unreal Engine. Which over time will further increase the safety of driving an electric car. Moreover, Sony and Honda Mobility have announced a partnership with Microsoft. The software giant will share cloud computing technologies with artificial intelligence tools from Azure AI.
Sony fans who don’t have an electric car yet, but do have a PlayStation 5 console, were probably pleased to see a promotional video in which Afeela drives along the virtual Grand Valley Highway One track. It will probably be possible to try out the model in the upcoming game Gran Turismo 7.
