Belgian striker Dries Mertens and Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira are both joining Galatasaray, the Turkish club announced on Twitter on Monday evening. The first, aged 35, comes out of nine seasons in Naples, where he became the top scorer in its history. He signed up for one season. Torreira, 26, signed a contract until 2026 with Galatasaray. He arrives for 5 M€ from Arsenal.
The announcement puts an end to a false suspense since the two players had arrived this weekend in Istanbul, expected and celebrated by the club’s supporters at the airport. Turkey’s most successful team, 22 times champion, Galatasaray finished 13th in the Süper Lig last season, the worst ranking in its history.
