Gaël Monfils eliminates Maxime Cressy in the 2nd round of the Masters 1000 in Montreal

For his second match in three months, after his difficult victory in the first round of the Masters 1000 of Montreal against pedro martinez, Gaël Monfils had to face for the first time the difficult challenge of the match without rhythm against the server-volleyball player Maxime Cressy. He got out of it with realism, even if he started in the worst possible way by offering his service on gross faults at 1-1.

But the Franco-American, serving for the set at 5-4, was picked by a Monfils making the best use of his returns and his quality of movement to slip in a winning passing which gave him the happiness on the wire of getting back into the match. The tie-break that followed was epic and very tense. The 35-year-old Frenchman got four set points, and Cressy got two, despite two double faults scattered in this decisive game. But the latter ended up cracking on a horrible volley to lose twelve points to ten. Against Cressy, everything is often played out on a thread. The evidence here was overwhelming.

In the second set, Monfils was the first to get two break points at 3-3 which his opponent, in a monomaniacal style, obviously saved on serves and volleys. Inevitably, a second tie-break awaited the two men. Bad start, Monfils had to save two set points again. The first on a good serve, the second thanks to a double fault from Cressy, his twelfth. More feverish, the latter still released an easy volley into the net, and Monfils, more striking on the important points, qualified for the next round where the winner of the match between Tsitisipas and Draper will await him.
