Against the background of the traditional lack of new releases at MWC from companies such as Samsung, Apple or Sony, who prefer to announce the premieres of their gadgets at their own events, Chinese manufacturers have captured the lion’s share of attention this year. Xiaomi and BBK are in a race for super fast chargers and super fast charging phones. Company Realme, mobile division of BBK, introduced the GT3 smartphone, which was the first phone in the world to support 240W SuperVOOC charging. It is able to fully charge a 4,500 mAh battery in just nine and a half minutes. However, even such speeds can be surpassed in the near future. Company Redmia division of Xiaomi, showed Charger 300 watt battery that charges the 4,100 mAh battery of her Redmi Note 12 Discovery phone in just five minutes.
Attract buyers not by the power of charging, but screen flexibility preferred another Chinese manufacturer, Honour. Its Magic Vs foldable display model, according to the company itself, can withstand 400,000 folds before any fold marks can be seen. That’s double that of Samsung’s current foldable flagship, the Z Fold 4.
The American Motorola Mobility, now owned by the Chinese Lenovo, played on nostalgic feelings by introducing the reincarnation of its Rizr model – a slider from the 2000s.
In the new concept Moto Rizr display unfolds like a roller blind – rolls into or out of the case at the touch of a button, or automatically – when playing a full-length video or when typing a text message. In profile, the smartphone looks like a slider, vaguely reminiscent of Rizr zero. In compact mode, the gadget has a screen diagonal of 12.7 inches, and when unfolded, the display can grow up to 15.3 inches, “leaving” from under the keyboard. Reviewers have already noted that the concept is similar to a model that is quite ready for the start of sales. The price of the novelty has not yet been announced, but there are suggestions that it could be comparable to the price of $ 2.5 thousand for the already sold Lenovo X1 Fold laptop with a foldable display.
Let’s be friends with networks
The current mobile congress in Barcelona turned out to be rich in all sorts of partnerships between manufacturers of network equipment and related software. One of the hottest topics in the world market is the development of the Open RAN concept, which involves cooperation between telecommunications companies from various countries and segments.
Radio Access Network (RAN) – unified / compatible network equipment that allows, for example, a cellular operator to use equipment from different manufacturers, and not exclusively from any one. In turn, the Open RAN concept implies an open software / network equipment interface for operators – by analogy with the open source concept.
To provide shared access to different providers, the Open RAN system is based mainly on cloud platforms. To create such common cloud platforms, hardware/software manufacturers need to reach an appropriate agreement with each other, and cellular operators need to agree with them on the use of such platforms. This cooperation is carried out within the framework O-RAN Alliance, which was founded in 2018 by five companies: American AT&T, Chinese China Mobile, German Deutsche Telekom, Japanese NTT DOCOMO and French Orange. The international alliance was created on the basis of the largest national RAN alliances that already existed by that time: the American xRAN Foundation and the Chinese C-RAN.
Now the O-RAN Alliance includes more than 300 companies around the world. Moreover, these are not only manufacturers of network equipment and network service providers, but also research organizations and educational institutions, for example, the Research Center for Wireless Technologies and the Internet of Things at the American Northeastern University (Boston, Massachusetts) and Taiwan’s Yang-Ming National Research University (Taipei). ). The alliance reports that its member mobile operators serve a total of 4.5 billion subscribers worldwide.
Within the framework of the Open RAN concept at MWC-2023, new agreements.
US telecoms operator AT&T, US 5G architecture manufacturer EdgeQ and US network equipment manufacturer Juniper Networks have announced a partnership with UK cellular operator Vodafone, one of the key members of the O-RAN Alliance.
Through this partnership, US companies will develop and integrate their systems and services to share in the Open RAN project.
In turn, the South Korean Samsung introduced vRAN 3.0, a new generation of virtualized software that helps mobile operators use it together or individually to evaluate the performance of their networks. This software measures the energy efficiency of networks, optimizes performance and data transfer, analyzes traffic and network outages.
Another key topic of MWC-2023 was the further development of 5G networks and the cooperation of companies in this direction. Manufacturer of telecommunications equipment Cisco Systems and corporation Intel signed a partnership agreement in the development of private 5G networks created for one company / organization. As part of the partnership, Cisco and Intel will create a common architecture for the operation of these networks in industries such as the Internet of things, engineering, and logistics. Both companies expect that joint developments in the field of private 5G networks will be of interest to their partners, customers and contractors operating not only in the US, but also in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
The topic of developing private 5G networks was supported in Barcelona by a major Chinese equipment manufacturer ZTE Corporation. The company introduced super compact deviceallowing you to deploy a private 5G network literally from the table.
The ZTE Mini5GC station is a 5G modem that fits into a regular A3 case. The company claims that this device is the smallest 5G modem in the world.
“With our mini-station, a private 5G network can be deployed in places that are difficult to reach for conventional equipment, such as an oil platform, a solar or wind power plant in a remote area, a high-speed train, an airplane. This will allow companies and their employees to use the full capabilities of modern network equipment, despite difficult external circumstances.”
