Energy and environment ministers of the G7 countries failed to agree on the timing of the phase-out of coal, informs Bloomberg.
In a communiqué following their meeting in Sapporo, Japan, they outlined their intention to phase out fossil fuels and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The document also says that the G7 countries plan to accelerate the introduction of renewable energy sources by 2030 – for example, increase solar capacity to more than 1,000 gigawatts and wind generation by 150 gigawatts compared to 2021. French Energy Minister Agnès Pannier-Runachet noted that the wording in the final communiqué is stricter than originally planned, and this “indirectly means that we cannot invest in exploration for new gas capacities.”
How informs Kyodo, Japan refused to agree on a specific timetable for phasing out coal, as the country is likely to rely on this source of energy for most of the 2030s. Britain and Canada insisted on the rejection of coal at the meeting.
