European energy companies have urged the UK to take urgent action on hazardous impurities found in natural gas shipped from the country, according to the Financial Times. transmits Interfax. It is clarified that the problem has already led to emergency repairs to the gas pipeline between Belgium and the UK, and in winter it could lead to more serious problems.
According to the newspaper, British gas supplies to Europe have been increased due to the energy crisis and concerns that Russia may completely stop exporting gas. The UK processes large volumes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US and Qatar and then re-exports it via the Interconnector subsea pipelines to Belgium and BBL to the Netherlands.
According to the pipeline operator, the gas flow to Belgium is “permanently polluted with solid and liquid impurities,” which include hazardous, poisonous, radioactive and flammable substances. Their concentration since April has reached “unprecedented values,” the source of the newspaper stressed.
In response to a call for urgent action on the situation, British grid operator National Grid said dust in UK pipelines was a “historic and well-known problem” that has been brought under control.
The problem with the supply of Russian gas to Europe began after “Gazprom» gradually reduced the volume of gas pumped through the Nord Stream pipeline from 167 million to 33 million cubic meters. m due to problems with equipment at the Portovaya compressor station. One of the reasons is the untimely return of the turbine Siemens after repair from Canada due to the fact that sanctions do not allow the return of equipment directly to Russia. After the Nord Stream was stopped for scheduled work from July 11 to 21, many European countries feared that it would not resume work.
