The Financial Times newspaper, citing a UN official, reported that the infrastructure of the city of Rafah, located in the south of the Gaza Strip, could not cope with the influx of refugees.
UN officials earlier said Rafa was becoming overburdened as nearly 85% of Gaza’s residents had fled south amid an Israeli offensive and orders to evacuate.
“Rafah’s infrastructure will not cope with the displaced population, which could reach one million in the near future,” the FT noted.
As the newspaper clarifies, currently people living in the city lack food, clean water and electricity. Among other things, many of them live on the streets because UN shelters are overcrowded.
