FSB announced the detention of nine members of the Tablighi Jamaat cell

In the Moscow region, the FSB, together with the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Moscow, stopped the activities of a cell of the international religious organization Tablighi Jamaat banned in Russia, nine of its members were detained, transmits “RIA Novosti” with reference to the press service of the FSB of Russia in Moscow and the Moscow region.

The members of the organization were found to have extremist religious literature, the UFSB said. A criminal case has been initiated under Parts 1 and 2 of Art. 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“participation in the activities of an extremist organization”).

Tablighi Jamaat was founded in the 1920s. in India as a pacifist Muslim organization, but later a number of countries began to consider it as an extremist association of the Sunni persuasion. In Russia, it was banned by the decision of the Supreme Court in 2009, the instance considered that its activities are aimed at violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation and discriminating against Russian citizens on religious grounds and supporting terrorism. Tablighi Jamaat is also banned in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

In the spring of 2021, the FSB reported on the detention of 11 members of the Tablighi Jamaat cell in Omsk. Then among the detainees were natives of Central Asia, it was reported that they would be deported to their countries.
