French military equipment traveled to Bosnia and Herzegovina via Switzerland
A convoy with military equipment from France passed through neutral Switzerland on its way to Bosnia and Herzegovina, reports RBC with reference to the press service of the Swiss Federal Council.
This supply of equipment is carried out within the framework of the EU military mission EUFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where European motorized infantry battalions operate. France is responsible for supplying these units in the first half of 2024.
According to the press service of the Federal Council, the railway convoy with military equipment of the French army passed through Switzerland without the need for special permission, since it was transit as part of Switzerland’s participation in the peacekeeping mission.
Paris requested the transit of about 70 vehicles, including light armored vehicles, from Berne. The equipment will be returned back to France via Switzerland, but French military personnel will not pass through Swiss territory.
EUFOR’s military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina aims to stabilize the country after the 1992-1995 conflict. In 2004, EUFOR replaced NATO peacekeeping troops in the country.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is seeking EU membership, having applied in 2016. In December 2022, the country became a candidate for accession, and at the beginning of 2024, the European Council began negotiations on possible accession.
